Making Cloth Diapering "EZ"

The Snap-EZ ™ Eco Inserts and Soakers!

For Pocket Diapers and Stuffable Trainers!

Two Great Styles -

Foldable Inserts:

Hemp+Cotton Fleece/Burley knit Terry (BKT)

These have a fleece tab to make taking out the used soaker a much dryer experience!

Eco Soakers

I chose these fabrics for very specific reasons:

The Hemp/Cotton fleece (H/C) is super absorbent and stays soft just about forever,
the H/C French Terry is so thirsty yet quick drying!

Unlike 100% hemp which is quite coarse and stiff and has trouble absorbing quickly.
H/C absorbs wetness quicker than 100% hemp fleece and holds more.

This realy helps prevent leaks on babies that really wet fast!

Natural Sherpa absorbs quickly and is very soft.

(Natural Sherpa has small quantities of polyester, but it is on the backside of the fabric
and is only used to stabilize the fabric, leaving the fluffy cotton to do it's job!)

Burley Knit Terry (BKT) because of its extreme absorption capabilities.

. This fabric really ansorbs a lot!

The one drawback to BKT is that it does not draw the wetness very quickly.

Why combined different material in the inserts?:

By joining the BKT to the H/C Fleece for the Snap-EZEco Foldable Inserts,
and then folding it inside the H/C fleece,
the H/C Fleece can draw the wetness fast
and the BKT can do it's job without getting overpowered!!
This combination is teamwork at its finest!

Since there is only two layers in the foldable inserts when unfolded,
these inserts really clean up nice and dry very quickly in the dryer!
And since I make these with the fleecey/fuzzy sides out there are
no dryer rocks (hardened balls of lint) inside to make your baby uncomfortable!
I tested this and the inserts with the fleece sewn to the inside took longer to dry,
were not as trim, and definitely developed some nasty dryer rocks!

How's the performance?:

In my home test, the Large Night Time Insert
held 2 1/2 cups of water without oozing onto the counter.
I did the same with a Premium DSQ Prefold and it held 2 cups.
Then I tried to squeeze out the water and got exactly 1/2 cup out of each.
So my soaker, even when squeezed held 1/2 cup more than the Premium DSQ Prefold!

Hemp VS Sherpa:

When comparing the performance of Hemp VS Sherpa, there are some basic points to consider.
First of all is Absorbency.
Hemp absorbs about as quickly as sherpa, and hold about the same amount
when comparing the same size insert or soaker. So that is not a majoy determining factor.

Secondly is Trimness
Hemp is much trimmer when compared to sherpa,
especially when you are dealing with mulitiple thicknesses
- the more layers, the more this will be noticeable.

So you get the about the same absorbency with either fabric,
but the hemp will make for a trimmer fit!

Thirdly is Holding Power
Hemp holds wetness better than sherpa
- this becomes evident when you child has a wet diaper and sits down,
or overnight when wetness can pool at the lowest point due to gravity.
With Hemp, this type of "
Compression Leaking" is very rare
(all inserts/soaker have their limits),
but with sherpa this is more common.

"So," you might ask, "if hemp is so much better than sherpa, why even use sherpa?"
Some children react to hemp, so for those children sherpa is a great alternative!
Also for those who do not have access to hot water, sherpa will do better in a cold water wash.
Also, for some, the added wash cycles needed to remove the hemp oils
is just not worth the benefits of hemp (but I believe these are in the minority!)

A little more about the sizes:

Night Time Inserts

These are intended to be used as a "4 fold" - that means it is folded 3 times, creating 4 layers (4 "folds").
But they can also be used when folded 2 times, creating a wider insert.

Day Time Inserts

These are intended to be used as a "3 fold" - that means it is folded 2 times, creating 3 layers (3 "folds").
But they can also be used when folded 1 time, creating a wider insert.

***Please Note that Hemp takes up to 8 or more washes to reach its peak in absorbency.
It is recommended that you even boil the inserts and soakers
for 20 minutes and then wash them 3 more times, dry them and then wash/dry 1 more time for best results.
These have already been prewashed 2 times before they are made into these inserts!
